Keir Starmer to Step Down as MP, Triggering By-Election in Holborn and St Pancras Former British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras, bringing his 11-year parliamentary career in the London constituency to an end. Starmer said he had decided that it was the right time to leave the House of Commons and “pass the baton” to a successor. He said his next focus would include international affairs, particularly defence, security, trade and technology. The resignation will trigger a by-election in the north London constituency, which Starmer has represented since 2015. The seat has traditionally been a strong Labour constituency. Starmer’s decision comes only weeks after he stepped down as Prime Minister and Labour leader, following growing political pressure within the party. He was subsequently succeeded by Andy Burnham as Prime Minister. The former prime minister had initially indicated that he intended to remain an MP until the next general election.
