Canada Announces $20bn Retaliatory Tariffs on US Goods

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs worth about $20 billion on US imports, escalating the latest trade confrontation between the two North American neighbours.The measures, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government, target more than 700 US products, with tariff rates ranging from 15% to 50%. They are due to take effect on September 8, 2026.The Canadian tariffs will affect a wide range of American products, including steel and aluminium, dairy products, furniture, clothing, appliances, seafood, electronics and tools. The measures are designed to match the value of the latest US tariffs on Canadian goods. The announcement follows Washington’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. Canada had previously warned that it would respond “dollar for dollar” to the new US duties. The latest measures mark another significant escalation in the trade dispute between the traditionally close allies. The two governments had been negotiating a new trade arrangement, but talks broke down after disagreements over issues including tariffs, market access and Canadian concerns about sovereignty and cultural protections. Carney’s government has also unveiled a C$7.5 billion support package for workers and small and medium-sized businesses expected to be affected by the trade conflict. Economists warn that continued tariff escalation could increase costs for businesses and consumers in both countries, particularly because the US and Canadian economies are deeply integrated through cross-border supply chains. The latest confrontation leaves the future of the US-Canada trade relationship increasingly uncertain, with businesses on both sides preparing for higher costs and continued disruption.
