INEC Fixes September 19 for Bauchi Assembly ByElections
The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for by-elections to fill two vacant seats in the Bauchi State House of Assembly. The elections will be held in Sakwa State Constituency in Zaki Local Government Area and Disina State Constituency in Shira Local Government Area. The two seats became vacant for different reasons. The Sakwa seat was left vacant following the death of the former lawmaker, while the representative for Disina, Saleh Hodi Jibir, resigned to contest the Shira Local Government chairmanship election. INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Bauchi, Umar Ibrahim, announced the timetable during a stakeholders’ meeting involving political parties and the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Electoral Security.
According to the timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries and resolve related disputes between August 21 and 25. Campaigns will officially begin on September 9 and end on September 17, two days before voting. INEC urged political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to comply with electoral laws and the commission’s timetable, stressing the importance of cooperation in delivering peaceful and credible polls. The Bauchi State Police Command also pledged to support the electoral process. The command said it would conduct a risk assessment in the affected constituencies to identify potential security threats ahead of election day. The September 19 polls will therefore be closely watched as voters in Sakwa and Disina prepare to elect new representatives to the Bauchi State legislature.
