HURIWA Commends Osun Voters, Demands Probe of Alleged Vote Buying The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria HURIWA has commended voters in Osun State for defending democracy through their participation in the August 15 governorship election, despite reported cases of violence, intimidation and killings before the poll.

HURIWA described the voters’ ability to cast their ballots and remain vigilant throughout the electoral process as a significant victory for democracy. The organisation also congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party on his re-election. However, the group urged relevant authorities to investigate and prosecute alleged cases of vote buying and voter inducement reported during the election, stressing that electoral victories should not overshadow concerns about the integrity of the process. HURIWA’s position comes as Yiaga Africa also acknowledged the credibility of the official results, saying its independent verification of ballots counted at polling units fell within the ranges it had projected. However, the election observer cautioned that this did not amount to an endorsement of the entire process because of widespread reports of vote buying and voter inducement. The development has added to growing debate over the quality of Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly the influence of financial inducement on voters. While Osun voters have been praised for exercising their franchise, stakeholders say stronger enforcement of electoral laws remains necessary to discourage practices capable of undermining free and fair elections. HURIWA’s call also reinforces the need for electoral authorities and law-enforcement agencies to ensure that allegations arising from the Osun election are properly investigated and, where evidence supports them, prosecuted. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, African Democratic Congress and other political actors have similarly congratulated Adeleke, with several describing the election outcome as evidence of the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic process.

As Adeleke prepares for his second term, attention is now shifting from the election result to the broader responsibility of strengthening democratic institutions, protecting voters and ensuring that future elections are determined by the free choice of citizens rather than financial inducement or political pressure.
