Nigeria, US Conclude High-Level Talks to Deepen Counter-Terrorism Cooperation Nigeria and the United States have concluded high level bilateral security engagements in Washington, D.C., with both countries agreeing to strengthen military-to-military relations and deepen cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism.

The discussions formed part of the US–Nigeria Joint Working Group Defence Bilateral Talks, which brought senior officials from both countries together to assess existing security cooperation and identify areas for further collaboration. According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence, the talks focused on shared security architecture, intelligence collaboration and operational synergies between the two countries. The Nigerian delegation included senior government officials led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, while the defence discussions involved Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Gen. Christopher Musa retd., and senior US officials. The engagement was held alongside the second meeting of the broader US–Nigeria Joint Working Group, which took place from August 12 to 13 The talks come as Nigeria continues to confront terrorism, insurgency and other forms of violent extremism, particularly in the country’s northern regions. The two countries reviewed ongoing counter-terrorism efforts, including intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism prosecutions, efforts to disrupt terrorist financing and border security. The discussions also considered the protection of vulnerable communities and the resettlement of internally displaced persons. US and Nigerian officials also acknowledged continuing challenges, including concerns over civilian casualties and transparency in some areas of humanitarian assistance. The latest engagement signals an effort by Abuja and Washington to further institutionalise their security relationship. The United States has previously provided Nigeria with military assistance, intelligence and training to support operations against terrorist groups. Both sides have increasingly emphasised cooperation rather than unilateral action in tackling regional security threats. The latest talks are expected to provide a framework for closer operational coordination and information sharing between the Nigerian and US security establishments.
