President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for a peaceful and credible governorship election in Osun State, urging security agencies to protect voters, electoral officials and other participants ahead of Saturday’s poll. The President’s appeal comes as the state prepares for the August 15 governorship election, with heightened attention on security and the distribution of sensitive electoral materials.

Tinubu charged security agencies to ensure that voters can exercise their constitutional rights without intimidation or violence.

He also stressed the need to protect officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and safeguard electoral materials throughout the voting and collation processes.

The call comes amid concerns raised by election observers about possible violence, intimidation and other disruptions during the poll.

The President urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to respect the electoral process and allow citizens to freely choose their preferred candidate. He also called on all stakeholders to accept the outcome of the election through lawful channels and avoid actions capable of undermining peace in the state. The election will determine who governs Osun State for the next four years, with 15 political parties expected to contest after the Social Democratic Party was recently added to the ballot following a court rulin INEC has commenced the distribution of sensitive electoral materials across the state’s 30 local government areas.

The commission said newly printed ballot papers and result sheets arrived late from Abuja following the inclusion of the SDP on the ballot, causing a delay in distribution. With voting scheduled for Saturday, authorities are expected to maintain heightened security around polling units, collation centres and other critical election facilities.
