The investigation is examining allegations that Farage failed to properly declare financial gifts and support. Among the issues under scrutiny is a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency businessman Christopher Harborne. The inquiry is also examining support Farage received from George Cottrell, a former aide who was convicted of fraud in the United States. Farage has previously argued that the £5 million payment was made when he was not an active politician and has rejected allegations of wrongdoing. Farage resigned as Clacton’s MP in July while the standards investigation was ongoing. He then stood again in the resulting by-election, presenting the contest as a chance for voters to give him a fresh mandate. He won decisively, receiving 22,239 votes, or about 63% of the vote. Satirical candidate Count Binface finished second with 9,455 votes. Major political parties chose not to contest the election. Farage described the result as a vindication, but the revival of the standards investigation means his financial affairs will remain under parliamentary scrutiny as he returns to Westminster. The standards commissioner is expected to continue examining whether Farage complied with parliamentary rules governing the declaration of financial interests. If the investigation finds that he breached the rules, possible sanctions could follow. Depending on the seriousness of any finding, these could include a suspension from Parliament and potentially trigger a recall petition, which could lead to another by-election.

The development creates an unusual situation: Farage has just won an election that he called in part to demonstrate public support, but the very investigation that preceded his resignation has now resumed.
