Count Binface Scores Career-Best Result in Clacton By-election

Count Binface has achieved his best-ever electoral performance, receiving 9,455 votes and finishing second in the Clacton by election. The satirical candidate secured almost 27% of the vote, an extraordinary result for a political character best known for campaigning in a silver outfit and dustbin-shaped helmet.

Binface was the closest challenger to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who won the seat with 22,239 votes. The contest was unusual because Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and other major parties did not field candidates. The result marks a dramatic improvement on Binface’s previous performances in national elections. His campaign, led by comedian Jonathan Harvey, combines political satire with commentary on issues including taxation, public services and the conduct of politicians.

Among his humorous campaign pledges were proposals to cut taxes for voters while raising them for everyone else, alongside other deliberately absurd policies designed to poke fun at conventional political campaigning. Despite the comic presentation, the size of Binface’s vote has given the campaign a serious political dimension. He won more than a quarter of the votes in a contest where the traditional opposition parties were absent. Farage won the election decisively, taking roughly 63% of the vote, but Binface’s performance became one of the most talked-about aspects of the result.

The Clacton election featured 34 candidates, producing one of the most unusual ballot papers in recent British electoral history. Binface emerged as the clear alternative to Farage, finishing well ahead of the other candidates. The result also underlined the extent to which the by-election became a protest vote as well as a contest for Parliament.
