Trump made the comments in a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, describing Infantino as “fantastic” and praising his leadership of FIFA.

“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing President Gianni Infantino,” Trump said.

He also credited Infantino with overseeing what he described as the most successful World Cup ever staged, adding that the tournament had been four times more successful than previous editions.

“If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!” Trump added. Trump’s intervention comes as Infantino faces growing criticism from within international football following controversy surrounding a failed proposal to sell stakes in World Cup commercial rights to private investors. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation AFC and CONCACAF have publicly criticised Infantino’s handling of the proposal, accusing him of breaking trust and acting without adequate consultation. The three confederations have called for greater accountability and an independent review of the matter.

The proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, which was ultimately withdrawn, had reportedly involved plans to sell a 20 per cent stake in World Cup commercial rights to private investors for about $4.2 billion. Infantino apologised over the proposal but has maintained his position as FIFA president. His supporters, including several football federations, continue to back his leadership despite the mounting opposition. Trump’s public endorsement could further intensify the political dimension of the dispute, given the close relationship that has developed between the US president and the FIFA chief.

The two men have appeared together on several occasions, particularly around preparations for and events connected to the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The latest controversy has raised broader questions about FIFA governance, transparency and the concentration of decision-making powers within the organisation.
