Niger Government Marks World Breastfeeding Week, Urges Mothers to Embrace Exclusive Breastfeeding The Niger State Government has joined the global community in commemorating World Breastfeeding Week 2026, calling on mothers to prioritise exclusive breastfeeding as a key measure for improving child health, nutrition and overall development. The state government said the campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding in promoting healthy growth among children, strengthening food security and contributing to poverty reduction through improved early childhood nutrition. Health officials in the state emphasised that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a child’s life provides essential nutrients, strengthens immunity and helps protect infants from infections and preventable illnesses.

The government noted that breastfeeding remains one of the most effective and affordable ways to improve child survival rates, especially in communities where access to adequate nutrition and healthcare services remains a challenge. As part of activities marking the week, stakeholders are expected to intensify advocacy efforts, educate mothers and families on proper breastfeeding practices, and encourage greater support for nursing mothers in homes, workplaces and communities. Officials also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies, healthcare providers, community leaders and development partners to remove barriers that prevent mothers from practising exclusive breastfeeding. The Niger State Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting maternal and child health programmes, describing breastfeeding promotion as an important investment in the future wellbeing and productivity of children. World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually to promote breastfeeding awareness and encourage policies that support mothers in providing optimal nutrition for infants.
