The airline announced that it will block off two middle seats in a special Economy Plus row on its upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft, replacing the unused seats with a shared table area. The new design will provide passengers sitting in the adjoining window and aisle seats with extra elbow room and additional space for personal items.

The new seating arrangement is expected to debut later this year when United begins operating its new A321XLR jets. All 50 aircraft in the airline’s order are expected to feature the redesigned Economy Plus row, although passengers will still pay an additional fee for the upgraded experience. Instead of a traditional middle seat, the space will feature a permanent table stretching between the two remaining seats. The table will include cup holders and provide room for small items such as snacks, laptops, or travel accessories. United says the move is part of a broader effort to offer more comfort options across its cabins as travelers increasingly look for premium experiences without paying for business class. While many passengers have welcomed the idea of more personal space, some travel experts have questioned whether customers will be willing to pay extra for a benefit that could sometimes happen naturally when a flight is not full. The airline has not yet announced final pricing details for the new Economy Plus option, but booking information is expected closer to the aircraft’s launch.
