Deng, a professor at the University of Chicago, was recognised for groundbreaking work involving mathematical problems connected to the behaviour of gases and complex equations. His research contributed to advances in understanding problems linked to one of the famous challenges proposed by mathematician David Hilbert. Wang, a professor at New York University and France’s Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, received the award for resolving the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a long-standing problem in geometry and mathematical analysis. Her victory also made her one of only a small number of women to receive the Fields Medal since it was first awarded in 1936. The achievement has been celebrated across China as evidence of the country’s growing influence in advanced scientific research. State media highlighted that China became the first Asian country to produce two Fields Medal winners at the same ceremony, joining a small group of nations that have achieved the feat. Both Deng and Wang began their academic journeys at Peking University, and their success has been viewed as a reflection of China’s expanding investment in mathematics education, research institutions and scientific innovation. The other 2026 Fields Medal recipients were American mathematician John Pardon and Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman, who were recognised for contributions in areas including geometry and number theory.
