Enugu Government, Foundation Reunite Mother With Baby After Road Accident Separation The Enugu State Government, in collaboration with the Custos Care Foundation, has reunited Mrs Catherine Ugema with her nine-month-old son after the pair were separated following a tragic road accident along the Ugwu Onyeama axis of Enugu State. Mrs Ugema, a trader from Taraku Town in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State, was travelling to Aba, Abia State, on June 23 with her infant son, Tomuter Ugema, to sell food items when the commercial vehicle conveying them was involved in a devastating crash. The accident left several passengers injured, while Ugema lost consciousness and became separated from her child. The baby, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, was rescued by a Good Samaritan and taken to the Children’s Emergency Unit of ESUT Parklane Teaching Hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment. Following an appeal for assistance by the hospital, the Enugu State Government, led by the state’s First Lady, Mrs Nkechinyere Mbah, intervened to support the child’s treatment and welfare. The Custos Care Foundation, working alongside the Peter Mbah Foundation, the Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, the Enugu State Management Board for the Protection of State-Owned Social Homes EMBOPSS, and other partners, provided comprehensive medical and welfare support. The interventions included blood transfusions, surgery, baby care supplies and other life-saving assistance. After being discharged from hospital, the child was placed in the care of EMBOPSS while authorities continued efforts to trace his family. Weeks of investigations and collaboration among government agencies eventually led to the successful identification of his mother, paving the way for their emotional reunion. The handover ceremony was witnessed by the child’s uncle, Gregory Aswa, an officer with the Enugu State Driver’s Rescue Service DRS, and the investigating police officer, Inspector Ugwuanyi Cecelia. Speaking after the reunion, Mrs Ugema expressed profound gratitude to the Enugu State Government, the First Lady, the Good Samaritan who rescued her son, medical personnel and all those whose support ensured the child’s survival and eventual return to his family.
