The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency NiHSA has warned that flooding affecting several parts of the country could continue intermittently until September, raising concerns about public safety, drinking water contamination, and worsening impacts across already affected communities. According to NiHSA, ongoing and expected heavy rainfall, combined with river overflow and tidal influences in some regions, may sustain flood conditions through the peak of the rainy season before gradually reducing later in the year. The agency noted that flood risks are likely to remain high between July and September, with possible intermittent flooding episodes during this period. Officials explained that the situation is being intensified in some areas, including Lagos and other coastal and riverine states, where rainfall runoff and inflows from major rivers such as the Ogun River contribute to rising water levels and urban flooding. Poor drainage and environmental factors are also worsening the impact in densely populated areas. NiHSA further warned that flooding could contaminate drinking water sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and public health challenges if preventive measures are not strengthened. Communities in flood-prone areas were advised to remain vigilant and adhere to official warnings and evacuation guidance where necessary. The agency has repeatedly emphasized the need for state governments and residents to take early warning alerts seriously, as Nigeria continues to experience recurring seasonal flooding linked to climate variability and intense rainfall patterns during the West African wet season.
