President Tinubu Flags Off Akwanga-Maiduguri Superhighway, Pledges to Transform Nigeria’s Road Infrastructure

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday officially flagged off the construction of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Maiduguri Superhighway, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to connecting every part of Nigeria through modern and durable road infrastructure. Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, President Tinubu described the project as a strategic investment aimed at boosting economic growth, improving regional integration and enhancing the movement of people and goods across the North-Central and North-East regions. The President said the superhighway forms part of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that quality infrastructure remains critical to national development, job creation and improved security. “Our vision is to connect Nigeria through modern roads that will stimulate commerce, reduce travel time and open up new opportunities for businesses and communities. We are building infrastructure that will serve generations to come,” Tinubu said. The Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway will traverse several states, linking Nasarawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Gombe and Borno, while providing a major transportation corridor expected to improve access to markets, facilitate agricultural activities and strengthen economic ties across the regions. President Tinubu noted that the project would also enhance national unity by improving connectivity between different parts of the country, while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs during its construction. Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the highway as one of the flagship road projects under the current administration, adding that it would be constructed to international standards with modern engineering features designed to ensure durability, safety and efficient traffic flow. Governors and other dignitaries present at the ceremony commended the Federal Government for initiating the project, expressing optimism that the highway would accelerate economic development, attract investments and improve the living standards of millions of Nigerians. The Akwanga–Maiduguri Superhighway is expected to become a key transportation artery, complementing ongoing federal road projects aimed at expanding Nigeria’s infrastructure network and supporting long-term economic growth.
