China Has Executed 11 Members Of The Infamous Ming Family Criminal

China has executed 11 members of the infamous Ming family criminal syndicate a gang accused of operating mafia-like scam compounds across northern Myanmar that defrauded victims, trafficked workers and caused multiple deaths official state media reported.
The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Zhejiang Province initially handed down death sentences to the 11 syndicate members in September 2025 for crimes including intentional homicide, serious injury, unlawful detention, fraud and operating illegal casinos
The sentences were reviewed and upheld by China’s Supreme People’s Court, which found the evidence “conclusive and sufficient” for the harshest punishment, clearing the way for execution.
The executions were carried out on Thursday, with state broadcaster Xinhua reporting that close relatives were allowed to meet the condemned before the sentence was enforced.
The executed individuals were members of the Ming family criminal group, one of the most powerful clans implicated in running scam centres and other illicit enterprises including illegal gambling, telecom fraud and human trafficking in Myanmar’s Kokang region near China’s border. The Ming syndicate’s operations, which thrived for years in the lawless pockets of northern Myanmar, generated over 10 billion yuan (≈$1.4 billion) through syndicated fraud, casinos and other crimes.
Court rulings found that the gang’s activities had directly caused the deaths of at least 14 Chinese citizens and injuries to many others, especially workers who tried to escape the scam compounds.
Scam complexes in the region employed trafficked workers, including Chinese and foreign nationals, who were often lured with fake job offers and forcibly held to commit online fraud targeting global victims
These compounds were staffed by mixed populations of unwilling captives and coerced laborers, with many suffering beatings, threats and confinement. Myanmar’s borderlands with China, Laos and Cambodia have become notorious hubs for such criminal networks, sometimes referred to as “scam parks” or “pig butchering” scam compounds, which have spread widely across Southeast Asia.
China has increasingly stepped up cross-border cooperation with Southeast Asian nations including Myanmar and Thailand to dismantle scam operations and repatriate thousands of trafficked workers. Chinese authorities began targeting these networks in 2023, issuing arrest warrants for key leaders and collaborating with local forces to detain suspects and transfer them to China for trial.
Public pressure grew domestically after reports emerged of Chinese citizens being trapped in scam compounds and, in some cases, killed while attempting to escape. The executions mark one of the toughest punishments meted out in China’s crackdown on transnational criminal syndicates involved in cybercrime and human trafficking.
Analysts say the action by Chinese courts signals a strong stance against large-scale scam networks, especially those that harm Chinese nationals or operate close to the nation’s borders.
