The expansion includes an existing capacity of 1.4 million barrels per day in Nigeria, alongside a proposed 700,000 barrels per day refining complex in Kenya, which is expected to serve fast-growing fuel demand across East African markets.The planned Kenyan facility is intended to improve regional energy supply chains, reduce reliance on imported refined products, and enhance fuel availability for transportation, manufacturing, and power generation across the region.

In Nigeria, the company’s large-scale refining operations continue to play a central role in efforts to increase domestic refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, a longstanding challenge for Africa’s largest oil producer. Analysts say the combined expansion could mark a significant shift in Africa’s energy landscape, potentially strengthening intra-African trade in refined petroleum products while reducing supply bottlenecks.

However, industry observers also note that such large-scale projects will require substantial investment, regulatory coordination, and stable energy policy frameworks across participating countries.
