Colombia’s National Seismological Network received more than 200 reports of tremors across the country after powerful twin earthquakes struck neighboring Venezuela, according to network coordinator Freddy Tovar. Tovar said the seismic events were widely felt throughout Colombia, including in the capital, Bogotá, where emergency alarms sounded and some residents evacuated buildings as a precaution. “We have received more than 200 reports of tremors nationwide,” Tovar said, adding that the characteristics of the earthquake suggested that aftershocks could occur and might also be felt across Colombian territory. The earthquakes, which struck Venezuela on Wednesday, triggered panic in several cities and were felt hundreds of kilometers beyond the country’s borders. Authorities in Colombia monitored the situation closely as residents reported shaking in multiple regions. Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) stated that there was no tsunami threat following the earthquakes. The reassurance came after concerns emerged across parts of the Caribbean region in the immediate aftermath of the seismic activity. Emergency agencies continued to assess any potential effects in Colombia while maintaining surveillance for possible aftershocks. Authorities urged residents to remain calm and follow official guidance should additional tremors occur. The earthquakes in Venezuela caused significant damage and casualties, with officials reporting dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. Rescue and recovery operations were ongoing as emergency teams worked in affected areas. The statement attributed to Freddy Tovar that more than 200 tremor reports were received nationwide and that aftershocks could be felt across Colombia was reported by multiple news outlets covering the Venezuela earthquakes.
