A major 4MWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Mini-Grid project at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano State is nearing completion under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme. The project is part of ongoing efforts by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expand clean energy infrastructure, improve power reliability in public institutions, and reduce dependence on the national grid. When completed, the solar mini-grid is expected to provide stable and uninterrupted electricity supply to critical hospital departments, including emergency services, theatres, laboratories, and wards.

Officials say the project will significantly reduce power disruptions that often affect healthcare delivery in tertiary institutions, while also cutting operational costs associated with diesel generators. The AKTH installation is one of several flagship projects under the Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme, which aims to deploy renewable energy systems across hospitals, schools, and government facilities nationwide. The initiative focuses on improving energy access, promoting sustainability, and strengthening essential public services through clean energy solutions. According to project implementers, the 4MWp system is designed to operate as a hybrid mini-grid, ensuring continuous power supply even during national grid instability.
