2027 Tinubu’s Re-election Bid Faces Uncertainty Over Wike’s Rainbow Coalition
2027: Tinubu’s Re-election Bid Faces Uncertainty Over Wike’s Rainbow Coalition President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign is facing fresh political uncertainty over the proposed Rainbow Coalition promoted by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, amid concerns among All Progressives Congress (APC) governors that the alliance could undermine the party’s candidates in state and legislative elections. The coalition, reportedly being championed by Wike as part of efforts to consolidate support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition, has raised questions within the ruling party about how the proposed political arrangement would affect its electoral interests across the states. While Tinubu’s re-election remains a central objective for the APC, some governors are said to be concerned that accommodating political allies outside the party’s established structures could weaken their influence and disadvantage APC candidates contesting governorship, National Assembly and state assembly seats.
The development highlights the delicate balance between building a broad coalition for the presidential election and protecting the ruling party’s dominance at other levels of government. The dispute has exposed a fundamental disagreement over whether support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition should require political allies to support APC candidates in other elections. Wike has maintained that the Rainbow Coalition is a cross-party platform designed to mobilise votes for Tinubu without requiring its members to abandon their existing political affiliations. He has argued that voters can support the President while choosing candidates from other parties for governorship and legislative positions, However, the Progressive Governors’ Forum has insisted that APC governors will not endorse political arrangements capable of weakening the party or disadvantaging its candidates. The governors’ position reflects concerns that the coalition could create competing political structures and encourage split-ticket voting in the 2027 elections. The disagreement presents Tinubu with a delicate political calculation. While Wike’s network could expand the President’s support beyond the APC, alienating governors who control party structures and grassroots mobilisation across their states could undermine the ruling party’s wider electoral prospects. The unfolding situation is therefore becoming a contest over the organisation of Tinubu’s re-election campaign, the influence of APC governors and the extent to which politicians outside the ruling party can shape the 2027 electoral outcome. With the APC’s presidential campaign set to begin in Kaduna, resolving the tensions between the coalition and the party’s state leadership could prove crucial to maintaining unity ahead of the general elections.
