In a major diplomatic breakthrough, US President Donald Trump and Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have signed a historic trade and rare earths agreement, strengthening economic and strategic ties between the two nations.

The deal, unveiled at a joint press conference in Tokyo, aims to boost bilateral trade, secure critical mineral supply chains, and reduce both countries’ dependence on China for rare earth elements — materials essential for modern technologies such as smartphones, electric vehicles, and defence equipment.

Under the new accord, the United States will expand investments in Japan’s mining and processing capabilities, while Japan will increase imports of American agricultural and industrial products.

President Trump hailed the agreement as “a victory for fair trade and global stability,” adding that it would “secure jobs and innovation for both nations.”

Prime Minister Takaichi described the pact as “a defining moment in Japan-US relations,” saying it reflects “shared values of resilience, trust, and mutual progress.”

Analysts say the deal marks a significant shift in global trade dynamics, as Washington and Tokyo position themselves as leaders in the emerging rare earths market.
