Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima on Wednesday led a significant peace-building engagement in Jos, urging Nigerians to embrace tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence across ethnic and religious divides. His remarks came during a courtesy visit to the palace of the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Royal Majesty Jacob Gyang Buba.
Vice President Shettima stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than a cause for division, asserting that “we are all connected one way or the other” and that what binds Nigerians together supersedes what separates them.
He emphasized that tolerance and peaceful coexistence are essential foundations for national development and unity.
Shettima highlighted that peace is critical for progress, noting there can be no development without peace.
The Vice President commended traditional rulers for their crucial role in maintaining social harmony and peace in their communities.
He described them as not just custodians of cultural heritage but as key voices in promoting peaceful coexistence and stability.
Shettima lauded the recent political realignment in Plateau State, particularly the cooperation between the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and Governor Caleb Mutfwang, calling it a positive development for peace and democratic dividends. The Vice President expressed confidence that this cooperation would enhance peace, boost the state’s image, and strengthen national stability.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang praised the cordial working relationship between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Shettima, affirming that it continues to benefit the nation.
Gbong Gwom Jos appealed for strengthened security efforts and genuine reconciliation, urging respect among Nigerians and stressing that both Islam and Christianity reject violence and bloodshed.
The monarch welcomed the political realignment as a move to enhance peace, reconciliation, and development in Plateau State and beyond. The Vice President’s visit coincided with a grand reception for Governor Mutfwang and other political leaders’ entry into the APC, reflecting ongoing political shifts in the region.
Shettima’s peace message reinforces the federal government’s broader call for national cohesion and unity under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration.
