Uzor Kalu warns Abia APC over alleged plan to impose governorship candidate, says move could divide party

He alleged that a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia involved state executives, local government chairmen, and other selected party leaders, who were reportedly mobilised under the guise of supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign, but may instead be positioning a preferred aspirant for endorsement.

According to him, any attempt to reach a consensus or selection without full participation of all aspirants would be “unacceptable and capable of destabilising the party.” Kalu insisted that the APC must uphold internal democracy, warning that imposition of candidates could weaken party unity in Abia State ahead of the polls.

In response, Abia APC officials dismissed the allegations, saying the party had not endorsed any governorship aspirant. They maintained that the State Working Committee and State Executive Committee remain neutral and committed to providing a level playing field for all contestants. Party leaders further stated that the upcoming primary election would be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, urging stakeholders to avoid statements capable of causing unnecessary tension within the party. The development highlights growing political manoeuvring within the Abia APC as aspirants position themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship race, with concerns rising over internal cohesion and candidate selection processes.
