UEFA Searches For Challenger To Infantino In FIFA Presidential Election

UEFA Searches for Challenger to Infantino in FIFA Presidential Election UEFA is continuing efforts to identify a credible candidate to challenge FIFA President Gianni Infantino in next year’s FIFA presidential election. UEFA Vice-President Laura McAllister said the organisation remains committed to finding a candidate capable of bringing together football’s six confederations and pursuing reforms in the governance of world football. She stressed that the candidate does not necessarily have to be European. The search comes after growing disagreements between UEFA and Infantino, particularly following FIFA’s abandoned proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights to its competitions to private investors. Several European football associations have withdrawn their support for Infantino’s re-election. The French Football Federation most recently ended its backing and said it would participate in efforts to identify an alternative candidate. Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, is seeking another term. The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco, with candidates required to submit their nominations by November 18, 2026. UEFA’s position is that any challenger should have a broad international base of support and a clear programme focused on accountability, transparency and changes to FIFA’s governance structure.
