Todd Boehly Leaves Chelsea as Clearlake Capital Takes Full Control
Todd Boehly has stepped down as chairman and ended his ownership involvement with Chelsea Football Club after selling his stake to majority owner Clearlake Capital. The development marks a major change in Chelsea’s ownership structure, with Clearlake acquiring the ownership interests of Boehly and fellow director Mark Walter to take full control of the Premier League club. Boehly became part of Chelsea’s ownership group in 2022 when a consortium involving Clearlake completed the acquisition of the club. He subsequently served as chairman and became one of the most prominent public figures associated with the ownership group. In a statement released by Chelsea, Boehly described his time as chairman as an honour and thanked the club’s players, coaches, staff and supporters. He also expressed confidence in Chelsea’s future under Clearlake’s leadership. Clearlake Capital had previously been Chelsea’s majority shareholder. Following the latest transaction, the investment firm has acquired Boehly and Walter’s interests and assumed full control of the club.Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder in the ownership group. The ownership transition brings an end to the structure established when Boehly, Clearlake and other investors acquired Chelsea in 2022. Chelsea said the ownership transition will not result in changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or existing strategic direction. Clearlake has said it intends to continue investing in Chelsea’s infrastructure, sporting operations and player development. The club has also highlighted investments made during the previous ownership arrangement across the men’s and women’s teams, academy, training facilities and player-support resources. Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano thanked Boehly for his contribution as chairman and described him as an important partner during their ownership of Chelsea. With Clearlake now in full control, the club enters a new phase of ownership while retaining its existing leadership and operational structure. The change brings to an end Boehly’s tenure as Chelsea chairman and his direct involvement in the club’s ownership.
