The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Senegal

national football team head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw and imposed a hefty fine following controversial actions during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final against Morocco. The sanctions form part of a wider disciplinary ruling that has drawn global attention.

In addition to the suspension, Thiaw has been fined USD 100,000 by the CAF Disciplinary Board.
The punishment stems from a moment late in the championship match when Thiaw was seen gesturing toward his players to leave the pitch in protest over a penalty decision against Senegal. That action sparked chaotic scenes and a 14-minute stoppage of play before the match resumed. The AFCON 2025 final was held on 18 January 2026 in Rabat, where Senegal faced hosts Morocco. Senegal eventually won 1-0 in extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye.
Television footage showed players briefly leaving the pitch after a contentious penalty award, leading CAF to investigate whether the coach’s conduct violated fair play principles.
In its official statement, CAF’s disciplinary panel explained that Thiaw’s actions violated the Confederation’s disciplinary code, specifically the principles of fair play, integrity, and respect for match officials. Encouraging a team to abandon the field was judged to have undermined the integrity of the game, even though Senegal went on to win the trophy. The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) was also fined USD 615,000 for improper conduct by the team, technical staff, and supporters during the final.
Two Senegal players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr received two match CAF bans for unsporting behaviour toward the referee.
CAF’s sanctions apply only to official CAF competitions , African Nations Cup qualifiers and continental tournaments) and do not affect participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
