SWAGA Says Nigeria Was Sliding Toward Collapse Before Tinubu’s Leadership, Endorses His Second Term The South-West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) has declared that Nigeria was heading toward an “irreversible cliff” before the emergence of President Bola Tinubu in 2023, asserting that his bold policy decisions rescued the country from economic and fiscal collapse. The group also formally endorsed his bid for a second term in office Speaking during a relaunch event and a courtesy visit to Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, Deji of Akure, SWAGA’s leaders praised Tinubu’s reforms in key sectors including infrastructure, education, housing, and military welfare, claiming tangible improvements under his administration. SWAGA, the original political movement that campaigned for Tinubu’s election in 2023, said its early support has been vindicated by what it described as positive change and economic stabilisation under the president. The group highlighted Tinubu’s willingness to make difficult decisions at a time when Nigeria’s economy was under severe strain, warning that without such actions the country could have experienced hyperinflation and potential bankruptcy. SWAGA National Chairman Senator Dayo Adeyeye, who also chairs the Board of the Nigerian Ports Authority, led the delegation along with key officials including the National Secretary, Bosun Oladele; Oyetunde Ojo, Executive Director of Corporate Services at the Niger Delta Development Commission; and Ayo Omidiran, Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority. Adeyeye said all leading presidential candidates in the 2023 election including Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso acknowledged the necessity of ending fuel subsidies, a policy later implemented by the Tinubu administration. He added that past efforts to sustain broad subsidies were unsustainable and that the reforms have preserved fiscal resources. In addition to economic measures, SWAGA pointed to several initiatives it regards as evidence of Tinubu’s effectiveness, such as the establishment of NELFUND student loans accessible at universities nationwide and increased support schemes for the military. The group also said that political realignments, including defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reflect growing confidence in the president’s leadership. SWAGA’s National Secretary, Oyetunde Ojo, emphasised that within the coming months the administration would inaugurate numerous housing projects across the country and expand housing schemes for military personnel, underscoring continued progress in public sector delivery. Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, the Deji of Akure, expressed continued support for Tinubu’s presidency, noting specific federal investments such as the approval of a teaching hospital for Akure a long‑standing demand of the community. He also remarked on representation at the federal level, saying that Nigerians from Akure have gained substantive ministerial appointments under the current administration. The monarch reiterated his endorsement, acknowledging SWAGA’s early backing of Tinubu and welcoming its renewed commitment to his leadership ahead of upcoming elections.
