Super Falcons Star Explains Why She Chose Nigeria Over England
Rinsola Babajide, the dynamic forward for the Super Falcons of Nigeria, has opened up about her decision to represent Nigeria on the international stage instead of playing for England.Babajide, born in London and a former youth international for England up to the U-23 level, revealed that her choice was deeply personal and rooted in culture, identity and lifelong dreams.
In an interview, the winger said the opportunity to connect with her Nigerian heritage and fulfil a dream of competing in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) was a key factor in her switch. After joining Nigeria’s programme, she quickly made her senior debut in 2023 and played a role in the Super Falcons’ success at the 2024 WAFCON a highlight she described as the proudest moment of her career.
Despite progressing through England’s youth ranks and featuring in the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Babajide felt a stronger pull towards representing her ancestral roots and contributing to Nigerian women’s football on the continental and global stage.
Her decision reflects a growing trend of dual-national players embracing their heritage and choosing to wear the Nigerian colours a boost for the Super Falcons as they prepare for major tournaments ahead.
