Portable Says He Will Honour EFCC Invitation In September Over Alleged Naira Abuse After Consulting Legal Counsel
Portable says he will honour EFCC invitation in September over alleged naira abuse after consulting legal counsel Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has said he will honour an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC in September over allegations of naira abuse, following consultations with his lawyer. Portable confirmed that he received the EFCC invitation in connection with alleged misuse of the naira during a social event held in May, reportedly linked to his son’s naming ceremony. In a series of videos shared on his Instagram page, the singer stated that he initially would not respond to the invitation immediately, explaining that he had sought legal advice before deciding on the next step. According to him, his lawyer advised that the matter should be deferred due to prevailing security concerns in the country, adding that conditions were not ideal for him to appear before the anti-graft agency at the time. Portable, however, insisted that he was not evading the EFCC, stressing that he would present himself in September. The singer also maintained that he was not involved in fraud or money laundering, arguing that the allegations against him were linked to his conduct at a family celebration. He further claimed that he earned his wealth legitimately through music and international performances, including shows in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Portable also criticised what he described as selective enforcement of laws on naira abuse, alleging that other public figures who engaged in similar acts were not treated the same way. He questioned why he was being singled out, insisting that he had not committed any financial crime. The EFCC has yet to issue an official detailed response regarding the matter at the time of reporting.
