Osinbajo Warns Supreme Court Electoral Rulings Must Earn Public Trust Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has cautioned that decisions of Nigeria’s apex court must not only be constitutionally final but must also command public confidence to preserve democratic legitimacy. Osinbajo made the remarks while addressing concerns surrounding electoral litigation and judicial credibility, stressing that although rulings of the Supreme Court of Nigeria are legally binding, they may still face scrutiny in the court of public opinion. According to him, the principle of finality in Supreme Court judgments does not automatically translate into infallibility in the eyes of citizens. The former vice president noted that democracy thrives when judicial outcomes inspire confidence rather than suspicion. He warned that controversial electoral verdicts risk weakening institutional trust if Nigerians perceive injustice or inconsistency. Osinbajo emphasized that judicial credibility must rest on transparency, fairness, and sound reasoning capable of convincing the public beyond legal technicalities. He observed that election-related cases often generate strong political emotions, making it even more important for courts to deliver judgments that strengthen democratic stability. Osinbajo added that while the constitution grants the Supreme Court final authority, public legitimacy ultimately determines how citizens accept and respect judicial outcomes The legal scholar urged stakeholders within Nigeria’s justice system to continually improve judicial standards, arguing that trust remains the most valuable currency of democratic governance.

He concluded that courts must strive to ensure their rulings inspire confidence, unity, and belief in the rule of law across the country
