At the same time, Pyongyang has publicly stated that it respects the Iranian people’s right to choose their new supreme leader following the election of Mojtaba Khamenei by Iran’s Assembly of Experts. In a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Wednesday, a spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the United States and Israel have “destroyed the foundations of peace and security in the Middle East” through their “illegal military attack” on Iran. The spokesperson said Pyongyang was “seriously concerned” about the escalating instability worldwide caused by the military action. The same statement also affirmed Pyongyang’s support for Iran’s internal political process, saying North Korea “respects the rights and choice of the Iranian people to elect their supreme leader” after Iran’s Assembly of Experts chose Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father.

Pyongyang’s denunciation of U.S. and Israeli actions underscores North Korea’s longstanding opposition to what it views as Western interventionism, and aligns with Tehran’s criticism of the strikes that have triggered broader conflict in the region. The remarks from North Korea follow the February 28 military operation jointly attributed to U.S. and Israeli forces that reportedly killed Iran’s longtime supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other senior officials. In response to the strikes, Iran has vowed retaliation, which has further heightened tensions across the Middle East.
