Nigeria’s House Of Representatives Has Approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Request To Secure A $516 Million Foreign Loan
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to secure a $516 million foreign loan, following deliberations during plenary on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja. The approval came after the presentation of a report by Abdullahi Rasheed, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Aids, Loans and Debt Management, recommending that lawmakers endorse the borrowing plan Lawmakers said the facility forms part of Nigeria’s external borrowing strategy aimed at financing critical infrastructure development, particularly major road projects designed to improve national connectivity, logistics efficiency and economic growth. The proposed funding is expected to support sections of a strategic highway linking northern and southern regions of the country, a project government officials argue will enhance trade, food distribution and regional integration. The House Committee on Aids, Loans and Debt Management scrutinised the loan proposal before presenting its findings to the chamber. The committee is responsible for evaluating foreign borrowing requests and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s fiscal and debt management framework. During debate, lawmakers considered the economic benefits of the project alongside concerns about rising public debt obligations. The Federal Government maintains that the borrowing aligns with its medium-term development agenda and infrastructure expansion plans. Officials argue that improved transport networks will lower transportation costs, stimulate commerce and strengthen national unity. The loan is expected to come through international financial arrangements structured with repayment timelines and grace periods designed to ease short-term fiscal pressure.Despite approval, analysts and opposition voices continue to warn about Nigeria’s growing debt profile, urging transparency in loan utilisation and strict monitoring of funded projects to ensure value for money. Economic observers stress that borrowing must translate into measurable economic returns capable of supporting repayment obligations without worsening fiscal strain. With the House of Representatives’ endorsement secured, the loan request advances within Nigeria’s legislative and financial approval framework, paving the way for final execution once all statutory processes are completed. The Federal Government is expected to proceed with negotiations and disbursement arrangements for the infrastructure programme in the coming months.
