Nigeria Deepens Ties With Türkiye for Military Modernisation
Nigeria is intensifying its defence cooperation with the Republic of Türkiye as part of a broader strategy to modernise the Nigerian Armed Forces, expand access to advanced technology, and strengthen operational effectiveness against evolving security threats, senior military officials say. Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) of the Nigerian Air Force, outlined the objectives during a high‑level working visit to Ankara.
The strategic engagement took place during an official visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by Air Chief Aneke and the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd). The visit, which began on January 26, 2026, marked a significant diplomatic and defence dialogue between the two nations.
Nigeria and Türkiye signed nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering defence, trade, education, media, technology and other sectors. These agreements are aimed at strengthening institutional frameworks, expanding technology transfer and skills development, and supporting long‑term national security and development objectives. Aneke and Musa toured major Turkish defence companies including ASELSAN, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and HAVELSAN under the coordination of Türkiye’s Defence Secretariat. These visits provided hands‑on insights into advanced military hardware and systems that could bolster Nigeria’s defence capabilities.
Expanded access to advanced defence technologies and aerospace systems. Structured skills transfer and training opportunities for Nigerian forces. Strengthened intelligence, surveillance, precision engagement and close air support capabilities crucial for joint military operations. Officials stressed that the partnership supports Nigeria’s efforts to fight terrorism, banditry, insurgency and other asymmetric threats. Air Marshal Aneke said the collaboration will help build a more agile, lethal and technology‑driven air force, while improving mission‑support systems and sustainment solutions.
Aneke reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to national security, emphasizing that the cooperation will help the service support ground forces more effectively, dominate the air domain, and degrade threats confronting the nation.
General Musa described the Türkiye visit as reflecting President Tinubu’s determination to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges decisively by equipping the armed forces with the capabilities and partnerships needed to protect national stability and sovereignty.
Beyond equipment and training, the engagement is seen as a strategic step toward deepening international partnerships, enhancing Nigeria’s defence posture, and fostering self‑reliance through technology transfer and collaborative research and development.
