Nigeria Declares March 19–20 Public Holidays for Eid‑ul‑Fitr

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, 19th March and Friday, 20th March 2026 as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid‑ul‑Fitr, the significant Muslim festival that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, who issued the decision on behalf of the government in a statement signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior In his message to the nation, Dr. Tunji‑Ojo extended warm greetings and heartfelt congratulations to Muslim faithful across the country on the successful completion of their Ramadan fast. He urged Muslims to uphold the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice that were emphasised throughout the month of fasting. The minister also called on all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for continued peace, unity, and prosperity in the country, underscoring the importance of national harmony amid diversity.

While wishing Muslim citizens a joyful Eid celebration, Dr. Tunji‑Ojo encouraged responsible observance of the festivities and urged individuals to extend acts of kindness to the less privileged in society, reflecting the spirit of charity that defines the festival. “The Federal Government remains committed to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians,” the statement added. The two‑day break provides a pause in official activities, with federal government offices, schools, and many businesses expected to close for the observance of Eid‑ul‑Fitr, part of the government’s recognition of major religious festivals as public holidays in the national calendar.
