According to Customs officials, the system is part of a broader modernisation drive designed to digitise border operations, improve efficiency, and align Nigeria’s airports with international standards for passenger facilitation. Speaking at the launch, the Nigeria Customs Service said the platform will significantly cut clearance times by enabling advance risk assessment of passengers and their baggage before arrival. Officials explained that SCADS also features automated duty assessment, where applicable charges on declared goods are calculated digitally, reducing human intervention and improving transparency in customs processing. The pilot phase of the system has been deployed at Abuja airport, with plans underway to assess performance before expanding it to other international airports across the country. The initiative is part of a wider wave of digital reforms in Nigeria’s aviation and border control systems, which have increasingly incorporated automated screening and electronic clearance tools to improve security and efficiency. Similar efforts across agencies have included the deployment of digital passenger processing systems and e-gate technologies to streamline entry procedures at airports nationwide. Stakeholders in the aviation sector have welcomed the development, describing it as a step toward reducing congestion at arrival halls and improving compliance with customs regulations.
