NiDCOM Commends Life Sentence for Killer of Nigerians in Canada
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NiDCOM has commended the conviction and sentencing of a suspect involved in the 2022 nightclub killing of two Nigerians, Chibueze Momah and Tosin Amos Arowoshegbe, in Canada. The Commission described the judgment as a significant step toward accountability and justice, following the decision of the Ontario Court of Justice, which sentenced the offender to life imprisonment with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. The conviction followed findings of guilt on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of unlawfully causing bodily harm. According to NiDCOM, while no court ruling can reverse the loss suffered by the families or erase the pain caused by the deaths, the sentencing represents an important measure of justice for the victims and their loved ones. The Commission also praised the patience and resilience demonstrated by the bereaved families throughout the legal process. Chibueze Momah, aged 22 at the time of his death, and Tosin Amos-Arowoshegbe, aged 25, were killed during a shooting incident at a nightclub in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, on July 23, 2022. Both victims were reportedly working as security personnel at the venue when the incident occurred.NiDCOM noted that the victims were described by family, friends, and colleagues as hardworking young Nigerians with promising futures, adding that Momah had recently completed his studies in Computer Programming while Amos-Arowoshegbe was also pursuing career advancement opportunities at the time of his death. The Commission further commended law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities involved in the investigation and prosecution of the case, saying their efforts ensured that justice was achieved for the victims. NiDCOM also reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians living abroad and advocating for justice in cases involving Nigerian citizens who fall victim to crimes overseas. It extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of their souls. The case, which dates back to 2022, has remained a painful reminder of the risks faced by Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly in violent criminal incidents abroad.
