NASRE urges Peter Okoye to retract alleged threat against journalist, warns on accountability amid P-Square dispute tensions

The Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) has called on Nigerian singer Peter Okoye (Mr P) to retract an alleged threat against journalist and NASRE member, Bayo Adetu, and issue a public apology, following an incident reportedly linked to proceedings in the ongoing P-Square family legal dispute. The association also warned that it would not hesitate to pursue accountability measures if any harm comes to the journalist, stressing the need for restraint amid heightened tensions surrounding the case According to NASRE, the alleged confrontation occurred during proceedings at the Ikoyi High Court in Lagos, where the ongoing legal battle involving the P-Square music group and their elder brother, Jude Okoye, is being heard. The group said eyewitness accounts suggested that Peter Okoye drew attention to the journalist’s presence in court, after which an alleged remark described as threatening was made outside the courtroom environment. NASRE described the situation as deeply concerning, especially given that the journalist involved is a member of its professional network. In its statement, NASRE expressed strong disapproval of any conduct perceived as intimidation of journalists, insisting that

  • Journalists must be allowed to carry out their duties without fear
  • Any perceived threat against a media practitioner is unacceptable
  • Accountability will be enforced if harm occurs

The association further warned that it would hold Peter Okoye responsible for any consequences affecting the journalist or his family if the alleged threat is not addressed. NASRE has formally demanded that Peter Okoye

  • Retract the alleged statement
  • Issue a public apology to the journalist
  • Exercise restraint while the ongoing legal matter continues in court It also urged all parties connected to the P-Square dispute to avoid actions or statements that could escalate tensions or undermine the judicial process The P-Square group comprising Peter and Paul Okoye has been involved in a long-running family and business dispute, which has at various times played out in public and in court. Recent court proceedings involving family members and associates have drawn media attention, increasing scrutiny and occasional tensions between parties and journalists covering the case. NASRE’s warning adds to wider concerns within Nigeria’s media environment, where journalist associations have repeatedly cautioned against threats, intimidation, and harassment of reporters covering sensitive legal and political matters. The group stressed that protecting journalists is essential to maintaining press freedom, accountability, and democratic transparency.

NASRE is demanding accountability following an alleged threat by Peter Okoye against a journalist during coverage of the P-Square legal dispute, insisting on a retraction, public apology, and restraint from all parties involved as the case continues in court.
