SOKAPU President Samuel Tabara said the group was seeking a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death and was not making a conclusion about who was responsible before the facts are established. The organisation has called for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, arguing that an independent investigation is necessary to address public concerns surrounding the incident. Speaking on Channels Television, Tabara said he was not aware of any Southern Kaduna cultural practice that prohibits autopsies, adding that legal procedures should guide investigations where there are questions over a person’s death. Mary Habila, a medical professional who worked with the medical team attached to Minister of Works David Umahi, reportedly died at a private residence belonging to the minister in Uburu, Ebonyi State. Her death has generated public attention, with calls for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. SOKAPU has filed legal action seeking an investigation and damages, while the minister has also called for a forensic autopsy to establish the cause of death. The group stressed that the ₦20 billion figure would ultimately be determined by the court if the matter proceeds, rather than being an automatic payment.
