Kano court sentences 19-year-old bride to death for killing husband nine days after wedding A Kano State High Court has sentenced 19 year-old Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging after finding her guilty of killing her husband, Salisu Idris, nine days after their wedding. Justice Maryam Sabo delivered the judgment after ruling that the prosecution had proven the charge of culpable homicide against Jibrin beyond reasonable doubt. The court convicted her under the relevant provisions of the Penal Code and informed her that she has 90 days to appeal the judgment. The prosecution told the court that the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano. According to the case presented by the prosecution, Jibrin allegedly poisoned her husband’s drink before attacking him with a knife, leading to his death. During the trial, Jibrin denied committing the offence. Her defence counsel appealed for leniency, telling the court that she had undergone personal reforms while in custody, including memorising the Qur’an, and asked that her family circumstances be considered. The court, however, upheld the prosecution’s case and imposed the death sentence. The ruling has attracted public attention due to the short period between the couple’s marriage and the incident. The case remains subject to the legal appeal process available to the convicted person.
