ISS Astronauts Ordered to Shelter as NASA Investigates New Air
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station ISS were instructed to take shelter inside their spacecraft after NASA detected new air leaks and ordered precautionary safety measures while repair work was underway, the space agency has confirmed. The crew were directed to move into their docked return vehicles typically SpaceX Crew Dragon capsules and don their spacesuits as engineers assessed the severity of the leaks in real time. The precaution was taken to ensure a rapid evacuation could be carried out if conditions worsened. NASA said the decision was made during ongoing repair operations aimed at addressing pressure loss in the station’s Russian segment, an area that has experienced recurring structural issues and slow air leakage over several years. The shelter-in-place order was issued as a “safe-haven” protocol, a rare emergency procedure used only when there is a potential risk to crew safety. It allows astronauts to remain in spacecraft capable of returning them safely to Earth if evacuation becomes necessary. According to NASA, the situation remained under close monitoring while engineers worked alongside Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, to stabilise the affected module and determine whether additional repairs were required. Officials later confirmed that the immediate threat level had eased after repair efforts were paused for further assessment, allowing the crew to return to normal station operations. The ISS, which has been continuously inhabited since 2000, continues to face periodic air leak challenges linked to ageing infrastructure, particularly in its Russian-built components. Space agencies have been working for years to identify and permanently seal the source of the leaks. Despite the disruption, NASA emphasised that the station remained safe and that the crew was never in immediate danger, describing the shelter order as a precautionary measure taken “out of an abundance of caution.”
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the ageing orbiting laboratory as international partners continue to plan for its eventual retirement later in the decade.
