Yousef Pezeshkian, who serves as a government adviser and is the president’s son, said he had sought confirmation from contacts after hearing rumors about the leader’s injury. “I heard news that Mr Mojtaba Khamenei had been injured,” he said in a message posted on Telegram. “I asked friends who had connections, and they told me that, thank God, he is safe and sound.” The statement is one of the few official comments addressing speculation about the new leader’s health and whereabouts. Reports from international media and unnamed officials suggested that Khamenei may have suffered injuries to his legs during the early days of the conflict, although the extent of the injuries remains unclear. Iranian state television previously referred to him as a “wounded veteran” of the current war but did not provide details about how he was injured. Despite the reports, officials say Khamenei is alive and being kept in a secure location, which may explain why he has not appeared publicly since taking office. Khamenei became Iran’s new supreme leader earlier this month after the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who had ruled Iran since 1989. The elder Khamenei was killed in a U.S.–Israeli airstrike on Tehran on February 28, an event that intensified the ongoing regional conflict. Following his death, Iran’s powerful Assembly of Experts selected Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new leader on March 8 The 56-year-old cleric is known for maintaining a low public profile compared with his father and has rarely spoken publicly or appeared at official events.
Since his appointment, he has not addressed the nation or issued a formal public statement, fueling speculation about his health and security situation.
