Hosepipe Ban Introduced for 850,000 Kent Customers Amid Heatwave and Record Water Demand Around 850,000 customers in Kent have been placed under a hosepipe ban following a surge in water demand linked to high temperatures and prolonged dry conditions, South East Water has announced. The restriction means residents are prohibited from using hosepipes for activities such as watering gardens, washing cars, filling paddling pools, or cleaning outdoor surfaces, as the water company moves to protect supplies during peak usage periods. South East Water said the decision was necessary due to “high temperatures and record demand for water,” which has placed significant pressure on local reservoirs and treatment systems. The company noted that recent weather conditions have led to sustained spikes in consumption, particularly during daytime heat peaks. Officials said the ban is intended to ensure that essential water supplies remain available for households and critical services, while also helping to stabilise storage levels across the region. Water companies across parts of southern England have faced increasing strain in recent weeks as hot weather drives up consumption, with demand for outdoor water use rising sharply compared with seasonal averages. South East Water urged customers to reduce non-essential water use wherever possible and to adopt conservation measures such as using watering cans instead of hoses, taking shorter showers, and fixing household leaks.

The company said it will continue to monitor reservoir levels and weather conditions and will review the restriction once supply and demand return to more stable levels. Authorities have also reminded residents that breaches of hosepipe bans can result in fines, as enforcement measures are put in place to ensure compliance during periods of water scarcity.
