Gov. Alex Otti launches grassroots engagement initiative to drive community-based development in Abia Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has launched a new grassroots engagement initiative aimed at identifying and addressing the developmental needs of communities across the state through direct interaction with residents. The initiative is designed as a people-centred governance approach that allows government officials to engage communities at the grassroots level and gather first-hand information on priority projects required in different areas. According to the state government, the programme will ensure that development planning is driven by the specific needs of each community rather than top down assumptions. As part of the initiative, government teams will visit various communities across Abia State to hold town hall meetings with residents, traditional rulers, youth groups, women leaders, and other stakeholders. During these engagements, communities are expected to outline their most pressing needs, which may include infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity, healthcare facilities, schools, and market development projects. Officials say the programme is intended to improve responsiveness in governance by ensuring that interventions reflect the real priorities of residents at the grassroots level. The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, who represented Otti at a town hall meeting in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area, said the initiative is aimed at aligning government policies and projects with the lived realities of the people. He explained that the engagement process allows government officials to interact directly with communities, listen to their concerns, and better understand their developmental challenges. Ajagba added that the administration is committed to ensuring that governance in Abia State is based on real needs rather than assumptions, stressing that each community has unique priorities that must be addressed individually. The Otti administration says the initiative reflects its broader commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development across Abia State. Officials noted that the engagement process is expected to strengthen trust between government and citizens while improving the efficiency of project delivery across rural and urban communities. The programme is also expected to serve as a feedback mechanism for evaluating ongoing government policies and assessing their impact at the grassroots level. Since assuming office in 2023, Governor Alex Otti has promoted a governance style focused on institutional reforms, infrastructure development, and improved public service delivery across Abia State. The new grassroots initiative is seen as part of ongoing efforts to deepen community participation in governance and ensure that development projects are more evenly distributed across local government areas.
