Gas Distributors Urge FG To Prioritise Practical Solutions For Domestic Gas Utilisation
Gas distributors urge FG to prioritise practical solutions for domestic gas utilisation The Association of Local Distributors of Gas ALDG has called for decisive and coordinated action to improve gas accessibility across Nigeria, urging policymakers, investors, regulators, and industry stakeholders to move beyond discussions about the country’s vast gas resources and focus on practical measures that will expand domestic utilisation. The association said that despite Nigeria possessing about 215 trillion cubic feet TCF of proven natural gas reserves the largest in Africa the country continues to face significant challenges in making gas readily available to households and businesses. According to the ALDG, inadequate distribution infrastructure, limited investment in gas transportation networks, and persistent energy access gaps have hindered the full development of the domestic gas market. The group stressed that increasing access to cooking gas and other gas-based energy solutions is critical to addressing energy poverty, reducing dependence on traditional biomass fuels, and supporting economic growth. Industry stakeholders noted that while Nigeria has made efforts to promote the “Decade of Gas” initiative, progress will require stronger collaboration among government agencies, private investors, regulators, and operators to translate policy objectives into tangible outcomes. The association also highlighted the need for expanded storage facilities, improved pipeline infrastructure, enhanced distribution networks, and policies that encourage private sector participation in the gas value chain. ALDG maintained that unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s gas resources would not only improve energy security but also create jobs, attract investment, and support industrial development across the country. The group therefore called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to intensify efforts toward removing bottlenecks that limit gas penetration, while ensuring that cleaner and more affordable energy solutions become accessible to a larger segment of the population. Stakeholders believe that with the right investments and policy implementation, Nigeria can leverage its enormous gas reserves to meet domestic energy needs and strengthen its position as a leading gas-producing nation. Association of Local Distributors of Gas emphasized that the time has come for action-driven strategies capable of transforming the country’s gas wealth into measurable benefits for citizens and the economy.
