ELECTRICAL SPARK DISRUPTS OPERATIONS AT LAGOS AIRPORT TERMINAL FAAN temporarily shuts MMIA Terminal 3, diverts flights to Terminal 2 The (FAAN) has confirmed the temporary shutdown of Terminal 3 at the (MMIA) following an electrical spark that disrupted operations. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the airport’s temporary Terminal 3 facility, prompting immediate safety measures and operational adjustments.
According to FAAN, the disruption was caused by an electrical spark in one of the terminal’s operational offices.
- The spark occurred at about 2:05 pm (14:05 hours)
- It resulted in smoke emission within the facility
- Authorities ordered a temporary shutdown as a precaution
FAAN stated that personnel from the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) responded promptly to the incident.
The agency confirmed that
- The situation was quickly brought under control
- No casualties were reported
- Safety protocols were effectively activated to prevent escalation
As part of contingency measures:
- All flights scheduled for Terminal 3 were diverted to Terminal 2
- Passengers were advised to adjust travel plans accordingly
- Airport operations continued with minimal disruption in other terminals FAAN disclosed that electrical maintenance is currently underway to ensure all systems are functioning optimally before reopening the terminal.
Officials emphasised that the closure was temporary and necessary to guarantee passenger safety. The development comes weeks after a separate fire incident affected another section of MMIA, raising concerns about infrastructure challenges at Nigeria’s busiest international airport.
Authorities, however, insist that safety remains a top priority and that all incidents are being addressed promptly. FAAN assured the travelling public that Terminal 3 will be reopened once all safety checks and repairs are completed.
