ECN, Nigerian Air Force Collaborate to Enhance National Energy Security The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have formalised a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening national energy security, with both agencies committing to joint efforts that will improve energy access, operational resilience and support critical military and national infrastructure. The collaboration was announced following a courtesy visit to the ECN’s headquarters in Abuja by a NAF delegation led by Air Vice Marshal E. K. Gabkwet, Chief of Civil‑Military Relations, and Air Vice Marshal A. I. Sambo, Chief of Logistics. The visit set the foundation for sustained cooperation between the civilian energy planning body and the armed forces.

According to statements from ECN and NAF officials, the partnership is designed to leverage renewable energy solutions and technical collaboration to bolster energy reliability for Nigeria’s defence and critical infrastructure sectors. The Energy Commission presented key policy frameworks including the National Energy Policy (NEP) and the National Energy Master Plan (NEMP) as the foundation for the cooperation.

In welcoming the Air Force delegation, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director‑General of ECN, described the engagement as historic, noting it was the first formal collaboration of its kind between the Commission and the Nigerian military. He emphasised that energy security remains essential to national development and defence readiness. Both parties affirmed that enhancing energy access particularly through the expansion of solar‑powered systems and renewable technologies would support more stable and sustainable operations across various Air Force installations. Immediate actions discussed include the deployment of solar‑powered lighting solutions to support NAF operations, reducing reliance on costly diesel generators and grid‑dependent power sources that are vulnerable to disruption. During the visit, representatives of ECN outlined how ongoing solarisation projects already underway in healthcare facilities and tertiary institutions nationwide could be adapted and extended to support military bases and operational infrastructure. This approach reflects a broader push for renewable energy adoption as part of Nigeria’s efforts to achieve long‑term energy resilience. NAF officials reiterated their commitment to supporting ECN initiatives and welcomed the cooperation, describing it as a mutually beneficial alignment of national development and security objectives. By combining ECN’s energy expertise with NAF’s logistical capabilities, both agencies aim to enhance operational efficiency, security readiness and nationwide energy reliability.

Energy security remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic growth and stability, particularly in the context of the Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Strengthened collaboration among government institutions including civilian energy agencies and the armed forces is seen as a key driver of improved national resilience against both energy shortfalls and security challenges. This partnership also signals growing recognition that renewable energy solutions are not just environmentally advantageous but also strategically necessary, enabling uninterrupted power for defence, communication, surveillance and emergency response systems.
