Nurse Micheline Kayimpa spends her days on the front line of the Ebola response at the Elikya Ebola Treatment Center in the Democratic Republic of Congo, caring for critically ill patients, administering medication, and helping those too weak to eat on their own. Working in an Ebola treatment facility comes with significant danger. Because the virus spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids, health workers face constant exposure risks while performing basic duties such as treating patients, cleaning contaminated areas, and managing medical waste. As the outbreak continues to grow, healthcare workers say they are facing challenges beyond the threat of infection. Kayimpa said that despite months of caring for Ebola patients, she has not received a single government salary payment. The lack of pay has added to the pressure on medical teams already dealing with demanding conditions, emotional strain, and the risks associated with containing a deadly disease outbreak. Health workers and response teams have called for greater support, including timely compensation and resources needed to sustain efforts to control the spread of Ebola and protect those working on the front lines.
