DSS, Army Foil Alleged ESN Attack Plot in Southeast, Arrest Commanders and Recover WeaponsA joint operation by the Department of State Services DSS and the Nigerian Army has foiled an alleged coordinated attack and kidnapping plot attributed to the Eastern Security Network ESN in the Southeast, security sources say. The operation led to the arrest of suspected ESN field commanders and the recovery of a significant cache of weapons and ammunition believed to have been stockpiled for planned attacks across multiple states in the region. According to security details, operatives acted on intelligence that the group was preparing simultaneous attacks aimed at schools, communities and security formations, with the intention of creating widespread panic and instability in the Southeast. During the raids, troops recovered 15 AK-103 rifles, 15 magazines and over 1,400 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Other items allegedly recovered include a smoke grenade launcher, teargas canisters, and items linked to disguise operations such as NYSC uniforms and identification materials. Security sources said the recovered NYSC-related items were allegedly intended to be used as cover to infiltrate communities and carry out kidnappings and coordinated attacks on civilians and security personnel. The operation also reportedly disrupted what investigators described as a broader plan to abduct schoolchildren, women and other vulnerable groups, with the aim of destabilising public confidence in the region’s security situation. Authorities further disclosed that intelligence obtained from the arrested suspects indicated plans for multiple simultaneous strikes across Southeast states, although the identities and exact number of those detained have not been officially confirmed. The DSS and military have intensified follow-up operations across Enugu and neighbouring states to track additional suspects and dismantle remaining networks linked to the alleged plot. Security agencies say the raids form part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime, kidnappings and attacks on security personnel in the Southeast, where several armed groups have been active in recent years. The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations in collaboration with other security agencies, while urging residents to remain calm and continue providing credible information to support ongoing security efforts.

Further details are expected as investigations continue.
