CAN Urges Churches to Stay Alert, Defend Themselves After Palm Sunday Killings in Plateau The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged churches across the country to remain vigilant and take proactive security measures following the killing of dozens of people during a Palm Sunday attack in Plateau State.

The attack occurred in Angwan Rukuba, where gunmen stormed the community and opened fire on residents, killing more than 40 people, including women and children. CAN described the incident as “tragic and unacceptable,” noting that the violence reflects a disturbing pattern of insecurity affecting communities, particularly during religious observances In a statement, CAN President Daniel Okoh called on Christian faithful to remain prayerful but also alert as they participate in Holy Week activities, including Good Friday and Easter services. He urged churches to work closely with security agencies and take deliberate steps to safeguard worshippers. CAN also raised concern over reports that the attackers wore military-style uniforms, warning that such tactics could erode public trust in security institutions. The association called for a thorough investigation into the use of fake or imitation military gear by the assailants, urging authorities to act swiftly and decisively. Witness accounts and reports indicate that armed men, some disguised as security personnel, invaded the area and carried out the attack within a short period, leaving multiple casualties and widespread trauma. CAN stressed that Nigerians are increasingly frustrated by recurring violence and are demanding concrete action rather than repeated condemnations.

The group called on security agencies to arrest and prosecute those responsible, insisting that failure to do so would further undermine public confidence. It also acknowledged efforts by the Plateau State Government but emphasised that temporary responses are insufficient, urging authorities to implement long-term security solutions. The killings have drawn widespread condemnation from various groups and stakeholders, with renewed calls for stronger protection of communities, especially during major religious events.
