At least 250 missing after UN-reported trawler sinks en route to Malaysia A trawler carrying around 250 men, women and children has reportedly sunk in the Andaman Sea after departing from Teknaf in southern Bangladesh, with UN agencies saying the vessel was overwhelmed by severe weather and overcrowding. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the boat was heading toward Malaysia when it capsized due to heavy winds, rough seas, and excessive passenger load. The incident is believed to have occurred around April 9, though exact timing remains unclear. Survivors rescued by passing vessels reported that dozens of passengers may already have died before the sinking, with others lost at sea. The boat had departed from Teknaf, a coastal town in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar region, an area frequently used as a departure point for Rohingya refugees fleeing overcrowded camps and seeking passage to Southeast Asia. Bangladesh Coast Guard officials confirmed that only nine people six Bangladeshis and three Rohingya were rescued after being found drifting in the sea. The survivors were later transferred to authorities for medical care and questioning. UN agencies said the vessel was likely carrying Rohingya refugees alongside Bangladeshi nationals, highlighting ongoing desperation among displaced populations who risk dangerous sea journeys due to limited opportunities and worsening conditions in refugee camps. Humanitarian officials warned that such tragedies reflect the broader crisis affecting Rohingya refugees, who continue to face restricted living conditions in Bangladesh and uncertain prospects for safe return to Myanmar.

The UNHCR and IOM have called for increased international support and long-term solutions to prevent further loss of life at sea.
